The human being (and creation in general) was created to climb the rungs on the ladder of perfection, and he was commanded to put effort towards fulfilling this goal (via Torah and Mitzvos). As he gets closer to reaching his perfection to the best of his ability, he will then receive assistance from Above to reach beyond his limitations.
האדם (וכן כל פרטי הבריאה) נברא באופן שיעלה משליבה לשליבה בסולם השלימות, ונצטווה להשתדל בזה (ע”י התורה והמצות). וכשיתקרב אל שלימותו עד כמה שה ביכולתו בעבודת עצמו, אז עוזרים לו מלמעלה גם ביותר מיכולתו
