A viral video circulating online shows a group of chassidim braving freezing conditions to immerse in a river during a recent visit to Lubavitch.
The group, led by Rostov shliach Rabbi Chaim Danzinger, traveled together to the kevorim of the Rebbeim. Following in the way of chassidim of old, they cut the ice to toivel in the water below it.
The thick ice needed to be cut with power tools, with large blocks pushed aside to create access. When the river refroze, they used cracked and removed the newly formed ice with shovels.
Bundled in heavy winter gear, members of the group entered the icy water one by one, quickly drying and warming themselves afterward.
“It was unbelievable,” one of the participants said. “I recommend it for everybody once.”
