Chabad of Charlotte County in Punta Gorda, Florida, was targeted in an apparent arson on Friday night. The fire caused significant damage to a classroom, including a smashed front door, broken windows, charred cubbies, debris, and spray-painted symbols across the building.

Police have confirmed the incident is being investigated as a hate crime, with extra patrols deployed to ensure the safety of the local Jewish community. No suspects have been identified at this time.

“While this was a deeply disturbing and painful incident,” shliach Rabbi Simon Jacobson told Anash.org, “we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of support we’ve received from both the Jewish community and the broader community. We are also thankful that no one was hurt.” Rabbi Jacobson also expressed appreciation for the authorities’ rapid response, ongoing support, and dedication to ensuring the center’s safety.

He described the extent of the damage and noted the unfortunate timing, occurring just ahead of Rosh Hashanah. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Punta Gorda Police Department.

“As we approach Rosh Hashanah, let this moment remind us of our collective strength,” Shlucha Mrs. Sheina Jacobson added. “This act of hate will not define us or deter us – it will only strengthen our resolve. We will continue to build, to gather, to celebrate, and to spread light.”

The investigation remains ongoing, with the community and local law enforcement working together to support Chabad and ensure continued safety.
