Catskills Highway Route 17 to Undergo Extensive Expansion

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced an extensive construction project on Route 17 that leads to many of the bungalow colonies and camps in the Catskill Mountains. The project will add lanes and improve congestion.

No more will it be stressful to head upstate on Friday afternoon on the summer Shabbosim. Starting soon, an extensive construction project will begin on Route 17 in the Catskill Mountains, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. The construction will address the constant congestion on the two-lane highway, and deal with safety issues that will prevent the frequent accidents that were common until now.

The governor announced that a scoping report on Route 17 has been completed, and they now have the go-ahead to continue with the construction project that will cover the area from Interstate 87 in Orange County and exit 113 in Sullivan County.

“Like so many of our bridges and highways, State Route 17 is a product of the mid-20th century that no longer meets the needs and demands of 21st-century New Yorkers,” said Governor Hochul. “This scoping report reflects the ongoing partnership that exists between the state and the community as we seek to reimagine this vital roadway into a modern highway that will reduce congestion, enhance safety, promote tourism and improve quality of life in some of the fastest growing regions of the state.”

  1. I can’t believe that, in this day and she, we are still adding more lanes to highways. It has been shown, time and again, that the more lanes you add, the more lanes you fill. Shortly after this expansion is finished, there will be gridlock once more. It’s a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere.
