Thieves are always looking for ways to gain some quick cash, and taking parts off vehicles to sell is one simple way to do it.

Late last week, a Crown Heights resident got into her car and was about to drive off when she noticed that her side view mirrors were gone. They appeared to have been removed purposely. Looking at the other cars on the block, she noticed a handful of other vehicles that were similarly vandalized.

The damaged cars were parked on Albany Ave. between East New York & Lefferts, and on Troy between East New York and Lefferts.

According to the New York Post, some side-view mirrors are now subject to stealing because they house expensive sensory equipment to aid in-vehicle safety systems such as lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot detection. They can be resold on the black market for huge dollar amounts.

So, if you hear a car alarm going off, please check to see if anything suspicious is happening and if there is, call 911. It may also be a good idea to push in your car’s side-view mirrors when parking.
