Bochurim from HaMesivta yeshiva in Canarsie got a chance to read from a Sefer Torah that was used by the Mitteler Rebbe in honor of Tes and Yud Kislev.
The Sefer Torah is housed in a shul in Flatbush and is only taken out of the Aron Kodesh on special occasions. The Rabbi of the shul is a descendant of the Mitteler Rebbe, and he received the Torah as an inheritance after it was passed down through the generations.
An incredible story is told of how the Torah survived the communist regime, which sought to destroy every memory of Yiddishkeit. The Torah was owned by great-grandchildren of the Mitteler Rebbe, who at some point received exit visas to leave the USSR. However, the Sefer Torah was confiscated by the KGB before the family left the USSR and put in their archives. Two members of the family, who themselves were Communists and high-ranking KGB members, put their lives on the line to sneak into the place where the Torah was being kept and return it to their family. It was thanks to their self-sacrifice that the Torah survived and was brought out of USSR.
On Thursday, the yeshiva traveled to the Shul to daven shacharis and read from the Torah. The trip was arranged by Rabbi Moshe Lieblich, head of HaMesivta, in honor of Tes Kislev, the birthday and yom hilula of the Mitteler Rebbe, and Yud Kislev, the day he was released from Tsarist prison.
