A new initiative at Yeshiva Ohr Elchnon in Los Angeles hopes to provide the opportunity for committed bochurim to finish the entire chelek aleph of Shulchan Aruch in one year.
In an average year of yeshiva, there are 160 days of Seder Shulchan Aruch. If each Seder is 45 minutes, then that’s just about 120 hours.
Chelek aleph of the Alter Rebbe’s shulchan aruch is 602 pages. If you learn a page of Shulchan Aruch in 5 minutes, then you can learn four pages and review them twice in one Seder.
With this calculation, you can learn the entire chelek aleph Shulchan Aruch with chazzarah in 1 year with time to spare for the hard parts and tests.
This is the math that went into a new initiative in Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon Mesivta. Every day there are 16 bochurim who from 5:00-5:45 pm sit and learn focused for the entire time. They will im yirtzeh Hashem finish the entire chelek aleph this year.
Although the pace of this program is not for everyone considering the pace and the time of day there is a large group of bochurim who have risen to the challenge.
The bochurim who started this program hope that continuing at this pace throughout the bochurim’s entire time at Ohr Elchonon for those dedicated enough to stick with it will finish the entire Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch.
Attached below is a sample schedule for all the days that there is Seder Shulchan Aruch in the yeshiva and then a schedule of when the tests will take place.
