Following the letter from Beis Din Rabbonei Chabad in Eretz Yisroel regarding the upcoming fast of Shiva Asar B’Tammus, Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba and Rabbi Yosef Braun of the Crown Heights Beis Din, released Halachik guidance on how to observe the fast on Thursday.

In their letter dated Sunday, the Rabbonim of Beis Din Rabbonei Chabad in Eretz Yisrael wrote that following consultations with health experts it is their opinion that the following groups are exempted from fasting:

Anyone who is sick, or has corona is exempt from fasting, women who are pregnant or nursing, patients with chronic illness as well as those at-risk groups are exempt from fasting. If in doubt consult your personal doctor.

In addition, those who are in isolation but are not sick, or those who are concerned, should consult with their personal physician, who knows their condition and can evaluate their level of medical risk and the level of exposure to the virus.

Quoting the above letter, the Rabbonim of Crown Heights added that “it is understood that healthy people must fast.”

“For healthy individuals who are concerned that the fast will harm them, can drink 1.2 oz every 6-7 minutes, and if necessary they can eat a little less than an ounce every 6-7 minutes,” they added.

One who eats or drinks according to the above measurements may still recite “Aneinu” during davening.
