New York City Mayor Bill deBlasio announced Friday that all New Yorker 16 and over are now eligible to get vaccinated at any city-run site in any borough without having to make an appointment.
“All city-run sites will be open for walk-ins as of today for all sites, for all age levels,” de Blasio said. “So you can just walk up and get vaccinated.”
It’s the most significant effort yet at the state or city level to simplify the process. Additionally, all city-run sites will now also be open to all New Yorkers, regardless of any geographic restrictions that existed previously.
“You can just walk up and get vaccinated,” de Blasio said, adding he was encouraging community health centers, including federally-supported centers, to permit walk-ins as well. “We think this approach is exactly right for this point as we continue to move forward. A lot of people just want it to be convenient and easy.”
Right now, only the Pfizer vaccine is authorized for teens ages 16 and up. Sites using the Moderna vaccine will administer shots to those 18 and older.
The move comes as more than 6 million total doses of the vaccine have been administered citywide, according to city health data. Some 3,315,616 New Yorkers have gotten at least one dose and 2,195,344 have been fully vaccinated.
Nationally, more than a third of Americans age 18 and older are fully vaccinated, while 52% have had at least one dose. The ratio is even higher among those age 65 and older, two-thirds of whom are fully vaccinated, according to data released by the CDC.
