After 60 Years of Service, 770’s HVAC Unit is Being Replaced

Over the past week, cranes have been spotted on Union Street lifting air conditioning units and reinforced steel supports to the back of 770. This is part of a critical upgrade to replace the aging air conditioning system that had been faithfully cooling the Rebbe’s shul for over 60 years.

A major upgrade is underway at 770, as the air conditioning unit on the western side of the building is being replaced at an estimated cost of $250,000.

The current air conditioning system, originally installed in 5723 (1963), provided sixty years (!) of service. However, due to its age and to improve air quality and energy efficiency, it was decided that a new unit was necessary.

The project was conducted with the permission and support of Agudas Chassidei Chabad. In keeping with the Rebbe’s previous instructions, Aguch has taken careful measures to ensure the project is conducted in an official and proper manner. The new air conditioning system requires reinforced steel support columns to accommodate its larger size and weight. A professional engineer was hired to assess the structural integrity of the building before the new system was installed. The engineer confirmed that the building remains stable, and all changes, including the installation of new support columns, were carried out under expert supervision.

The air conditioning units in 770 are especially crucial during the month of Tishrei, a time when thousands of visitors from around the world pack the shul for the yomim noraim and Sukkos. The new system, comprised of two units of 20 tons each, is designed to provide more efficient cooling and air circulation, making it easier to cool the large crowds during peak periods.

The project is being partially funded by the 770 Congregation Lubavitch committee, with the costs being covered by proceeds from seating reservations and aliyos. Several generous donors have also contributed to help with the costs. However, at the hefty price of $250,000, the committee is still short on funds and is welcoming donations.

To participate in this project to ensure a comfortable environment in 770 for thousands of visitors year-round, please donate at 770shul.org.
