A New Chapter of Learning and Fun at Hamesivta

This past year witnessed HaMesivta’s evolution into a mainstream yeshiva tailored for boys who thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment, appreciating a shorter day, smaller classes, and the perfect blend of serious learning and enjoyable moments.

Under the dedicated leadership of Rabbi Moshe Sperlin, HaMesivta has undergone a remarkable transformation. This past year witnessed HaMesivta’s evolution into a mainstream yeshiva tailored for boys who thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment, appreciating a shorter day, smaller classes, and the perfect blend of serious learning and enjoyable moments.

A Love for Learning

At HaMesivta, it’s never about covering ground or finishing a certain number of pages; it’s about cultivating a love for learning. Emphasizing “Quality over Quantity,” classes are tailored to each student’s level, fostering mastery of material without the pressure of simply moving through the curriculum.

Recently, Rabbi Reich, the Rabbi of Khal Menachem Zion in Boro Park, conducted a challenging Gemara test showcasing the mastery of a full perek by the bochurim and delivered words of inspiration. He emphasized how Hashem values and appreciates hard work over anything else, instilling a valuable perspective in the students.

Inspiration Over Force

The yeshiva places a strong emphasis on inspiring their students rather than imposing strict directives. This is achieved through great learning, a healthy relationship with the teachers, inspiring speakers, and hands-on activities that bring yidishkeit to life.

Notable figures such as Rabbi Keller provided hands-on experience, educating the bochurim about Esrogim. Additionally, Rabbi Zirkind visited and ran a special seder niggunim, teaching the bochurim the history of many niggunim. Businessman and philanthropist Berel Yunik shared his experiences, speaking about Yud Daled Kislev and his recent trip to Israel, where he visited and inspired the Yidden at the border with Gaza. To the surprise of the bochurim, he showcased artifacts such as a coin and oil lamp from the time of the second Beis Hamikdash.

On Yud Kislev, the bochurim had a special experience as they davened with the Mittler Rebbe’s sefer Torah. Hey Teves brought another memorable excursion as the bochurim visited the Rebbe’s library.

Other inspiring speakers included Rabbi Moshe Lieblich, shliach in Wilmington, North Carolina, and Rabbi Bochi Bro, shliach in Melbourne, Australia, who shared insights about their shlichus, inspiring the bochurim that they are part of the Rebbe’s army. Such immersive experiences contribute to a well-rounded education that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Making Yeshiva Fun

“We want the Bochurim to love coming to yeshiva, love the learning, feel connected to Torah, and have a great time doing it,” says Rabbi Sperlin. This philosophy is at the heart of HaMesivta’s approach, evident in the diverse activities that go beyond traditional learning.

The bochurim have enjoyed a wide range of exciting activities, including a delightful day in the park at Governors Island, where they explored, played, and strengthened their camaraderie. They also had a blast during a pizza-making session at a teacher’s house. BBQs in the park and bowling added a dynamic and enjoyable dimension to the yeshiva experience.

Inside the yeshiva, there’s more than just intense learning. With facilities like a game room, computer room, and basketball court, HaMesivta ensures that learning is not only engaging but also a source of joy. These activities aim to put smiles on the faces of the bochurim, fostering a positive and enjoyable atmosphere.

Rabbi Sperlin believes that if a bochur is happy and enjoys yeshiva, he will develop a love for yidishkeit as well. The commitment to fun is a vital component of HaMesivta’s mission, creating an environment where learning is not only serious but also a source of lasting joy.
