90 Years Since the Frierdiker Rebbe’s Wonderous Dream

Exactly 90 years ago to the day, the Frierdiker Rebbe summoned his son-in-law, our Rebbe, to tell him about a vision he saw of the Rebbe Rashab the previous night, and how it related to him.

Exactly 90 years ago to the day, on 12 Kislev, 5693, the Frierdiker Rebbe summoned his son-in-law, our Rebbe, to tell him about a vision he saw of the Rebbe Rashab the previous night, and how it related to him.

The Rebbe later recorded what the Frierdiker Rebbe told him in his personal diary, which was published decades later as ‘Reshimas Hayoman’.

The following is a free translation of the Rebbe’s record of the Frierdiker Rebbe’s words, published in Reshimas Hayoman page 294.

Sunday, 12 Kislev [56]93.

[The Frierdiker Rebbe told me] “for the dream I saw today, it would be appropriate to bring mashke, give me a kiss, bring mashke, and let us begin studying Chassidus.”

I wanted to kiss his hand, but he motioned to his forehead… then he gave me a kiss on my cheek.

[In explaining his words, the Frierdiker Rebbe began to explain] “My father [the Rebbe Rashab] told me: ‘Why are you dejected? In your house, a light shines at night.’

“I awoke, and the moon was lighting up the room. But… [at this point the Rebbe comments that from the Frierdiker Rebbe’s gesture, he seemed to say that ‘this was not what he meant’] I went to the library and I found [you] reading a safer…”

[The Frierdiker Rebbe then continued regarding visions of his father] “Generally, I see him wearing Shabbos clothes and a Yarmulke [without a hat].”
