Over six decades after he co-founded Camp Gan Yisroel in Upstate New York, and served as the camp’s head counselor, Rabbi Moshe Lazar returned to visit the camp in Parksville, accompanied by family members.

When Rabbi Moshe Lazar was a yeshiva student in his late teens, he wrote to the Rebbe with the idea of opening a Chabad summer camp for Jewish children – an initiative the Rebbe embraced. With the Rebbe’s approval, the world’s first Camp Gan Yisroel opened Upstate New York in the summer of 5716. A number of years later, the camp moved to Parksville, New York, where it remains until today.

On Sunday, Rabbi Lazar, today a renowned shliach in Milan, Italy, returned to the camp, where he “shepped nachas” from how the camp had grown and continues to grow. He was accompanied by his sons in law Rabbi Mendel Zalmanov of Crown Heights, and Rabbi Boruch Oberlander, Head Shliach of Budapest, Hungary.

He was greeted by camp directors Rabbi Avorohom Shemtov, and Rabbi Yossi Futerfas, and the three engaged in a warm discussion.
