5 Myths About Internet Filters — And Why They Matter

In today’s digital world, technology is everywhere — in business, in our Shlichus, and in our homes. Still, the biggest challenge isn’t whether people need filters — it’s the misconceptions that keep them from getting one. Here are five of the most common fears.

In today’s digital world, technology is everywhere — in business, in our Shlichus, and in our homes. It connects us and helps us, but without boundaries, it can take over our lives. These tools can inspire and empower, but they can just as easily distract, waste our time, and expose us to things we don’t want in our homes.

To address this issue and make digital safety more accessible, CH Safetech has reopened with a new office located at the Crown Heights Community Council. In addition to walk-in hours, our customer service is always just a call or text away — even beyond office hours — to provide answers and guidance.

Still, the biggest challenge isn’t whether people need filters — it’s the misconceptions that keep them from getting one. Here are five of the most common fears:

(1) “If I get a filter, I won’t be able to use my phone normally.” Filters are fully customizable. You can keep specific apps, filter sites by category, whitelist certain websites, block WhatsApp status and channels, and even access kosher YouTube content. And if you’re unsure, our team is always available to walk you through it.

(2) “It’s embarrassing — people will think I’m weak if I get a filter.” Protecting yourself and your family is a sign of strength, not weakness. Just like you lock your home, safeguarding your phone is both responsible and respected.

(3) “Filters are for kids, not for adults like me.” Adults also face wasted hours and unwanted exposure. A kosher filter is not only about protection — it’s about clarity, focus, and living with peace of mind.

(4) “I don’t know which filter to choose.” That’s exactly why our office exists. We’ll guide you through the options and match the right solution for your needs.

(5) “If I need to change the filter later, I’ll be stuck.” Filters are flexible. Settings can be adjusted anytime, and our local office is here to help with upgrades, modifications, or troubleshooting.

We appreciate your feedback. If you have any additional information to contribute to this article, it will be added below.

    1. iPhone with parental controls with someone else who knows the code and a whitelist website and no apps downloads and no apps with non kosher content is the best filter

      1. Maybe for you but very often people end up being told the code at some point when they really need something etc.
I have a filter and I think it’s the best way.

    2. Filters are a great way for filtering places and filter companies to monitor your every move. I’d rather have a family member choose a passcode and setup restrictions.

    3. I have had filters on all my devices for many years, & no one monitors me; it’s the only guarantee to keep me & my family safe, hassle-free. Considering that the entire ultra-frum world has been totally on board with filter requirements for over 10 years, it’s very surprising that in Crown Heights, we’re just barely getting started
