Over 150 soccer fans from Israel and Uruguay put on tefillin with shluchim from Buenos Aires and Yeshiva students during the semi-final match of the World Cup between Israel and Uruguay.

The team made Israeli soccer history last week when it defeated Brazil 3-2 in the quarter-finals, but ultimately lost 1-0 to Uraguay in the semi-finals.

“It is not something you get to experience every day and to see the joy of the people who have the opportunity to wrap tefillin inside the stadium without shame!” one of the shluchim told Anash.org. “It was a moment of genuine partnership between the fans of both teams when they came to place tefillin in the booth.”

“It was quite emotional to put on tefillin with the grandfather of a player from the national team, and even more exciting to see that it’s probably been a good few years that he hasn’t put on tefillin,” a bochur said.
