Yosef (Gerald) Lever, a devoted mechanech and beloved member of the Lubavitch community in Melbourne, passed away on Sunday, 16 Av.
He was 91 years old.
Born in England in 1933, Yosef was evacuated with his Yeshiva to Wales during the Battle of Britain, an experience that shaped his early commitment to Torah learning. He married Rivka (Ursula) and began his career in chinuch as a teacher at the Hasmonean High School in London.
In 1973, Yosef and his family relocated to Melbourne, Australia, where he continued his lifelong dedication to education, teaching at Mount Scopus Memorial College. Deeply connected to the Lubavitch Yeshiva Centre, he sent his children to the Yeshiva school and became a regular participant in the shiurim of Rabbi Y. D. Groner and later Rabbi Y. Telsner for nearly 50 years. His wit, consistency, and love of Torah left a lasting impression on students and friends alike.
Yosef is survived by his wife Rivka, and by his sons Michael, Norman, Yirmi, and Efraim, all residing in Australia, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom are shluchim and Anash in Israel, Australia, and the United States.
The levaya took place on Monday, 17 Av, in Melbourne, where he was laid to rest surrounded by family, friends, and former students who came to honor a life dedicated to Torah, community, and kindness.
