Yeled V’Yalda held a series of informative teleconferences covering medical advice, tips on enhancing bonding with children, self-care ideas for parents, scheduling and more.
Yeled V’Yalda is continuing to provide our parents with the tools they need as we navigate the COVID-19 crisis. Tuesday evening, March 24th, Dr. Dovid Fox, of Project Chai’s Crisis Intervention Department, presented a teleconference “Finding Direction and Support During These Times of Challenge”. The conference was geared toward mothers. Wednesday evening’s teleconference by Dr. Fox, was addressed specifically for fathers.
Dr. Fox shared that it is reasonable for parents to have fears and concerns. However, children require a sense of calm and the understanding that the family will persevere. Parents should be good role models and demonstrate composure. In addition, parents should listen to their children and validate their concerns. Communication is important.
Spouses should also interact and validate each other. They should attempt to spend time together, preferably without the children. Mothers should take time for self-care. Dr. Fox stressed the RSS model: Routine, Schedule and Structure. Children should be responsible to do chores and to cover school work. When possible, mothers should try to have private time with each child, even if it is just for a few minutes.
Ultimately, when a mother presents with a calm demeanor, the atmosphere of the home will be pleasant too.
