Watch: Igniting the Spark Within Every Child
In a new installment of the Rebbe’s letters on chinuch, Rabbi Fishel Oster, renowned maggid shiur at Oholei Torah Zal, reveals their timeless message that true responsibility in chinuch means guiding a child naturally drawn to worldly interests and channeling that same energy toward ruchniyus.
The Chinuch Office of Oholei Torah has released the sixth video in its seven-week series exploring the Rebbe’s letters to Oholei Torah, produced in honor of seventy years of Chinuch al Taharas Hakodesh.
This installment focuses on a letter written by the Rebbe in 5740 to the participants of the annual Oholei Torah dinner. The letter is shared by Rabbi Fishel Oster, a renowned magid shiur and beloved mechanech in Oholei Torah Zal, who uncovers the letters timeless vision for chinuch today.
Written by the Rebbe in both Yiddish and English, the letter emphasizes that since chinuch is a Divine command, Hashem provides the necessary strength and abilities to fulfill it. The Rebbe highlights the immense importance of supporting Torah education, as well as the special assistance granted from Above to those who dedicate themselves to this mission.
Rabbi Oster carefully analyzes the Rebbe’s precise wording and uncovers deeper messages embedded between the lines. He explains that the Rebbe’s discussion of responsibility in chinuch does not refer merely to academic success.
The real challenge, he notes, is taking a child who is naturally “turned on” to worldly interests and redirecting that same excitement toward ruchniyus and a life centered around Torah and mitzvos.
Throughout the shiur, Rabbi Oster repeatedly stresses the Rebbe’s approach to chinuch, reflected both in this letter and throughout the Rebbe’s teachings, that children may sometimes appear uninterested or incapable, yet every child possesses a neshamah that longs for truth. The role of parents and mechanchim is to ignite and reveal that inner spark and never to label a child as incapable or beyond growth.
Rabbi Oster also highlights the Rebbe’s emphasis on the pure and uncompromised chinuch of Oholei Torah. True chinuch, he explains, cannot be diluted and only authentic, uncompromised chincuh endures and creates continuity for generations to come.
