US, Israel Launch War on Iran, Khamenei Dead
Early Shabbos morning, the United States and Israel launched an unprecedented joint military strike on hundreds of targets in Iran, killing Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei along with several regime officials.
The U.S. and Israel launched a major joint attack on Iran early Shabbos morning, carrying out strikes on hundreds of targets, including the leadership of the Iranian regime.
At about 9:40 p.m., a senior Israeli official confirmed that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is dead following the opening strikes. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was even shown photo evidence of his body being pulled from the compound.
President Donald Trump confirmed the news on Truth Social, writing, “Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead. He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do.” Trump added that the heavy and pinpoint bombing will continue uninterrupted to achieve peace, and he urged the Iranian people to take over their government. In an earlier video statement, Trump announced the start of major combat operations, stating the objective is to completely destroy Iran’s missile industry and navy.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressed the nation regarding the attack, noting, “There are many signs that this dictator is gone.” He added that “in a powerful surprise attack we destroyed the compound of the tyrant Khamenei in the heart of Tehran,” and confirmed that the military operation “will continue as long as necessary.”
Speaking to the broader goals of the strikes, Netanyahu stated, “Our joint action will create the conditions for the courageous Iranian people to take their destiny into their own hands.” He also took to social media to call directly on the citizens of Iran to rise up. “This is your time to join forces, topple the regime, and secure your future,” he wrote, calling it a “once-in-a-generation chance.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also targeted in the opening strikes, along with dozens of other leaders. The IDF confirmed the elimination of seven senior officials of the Iranian Defense Leadership. According to Channel 12 journalist Amit Segal, Israel, not the U.S., was the one that attacked Khamenei, dropping thirty bombs on the compound. Khamenei’s military secretary is dead, and apparently so are family members. According to Kan News, Khamenei’s son and successor, Motjaba Khamenei, was also killed in the strike.
Iran retaliated by firing missiles and drones toward Israel, and Israelis spent Shabbos day running in and out of bomb shelters. Boruch Hashem, no Israelis were killed in the barrages, with only mild injuries reported from falls while running to shelter, and an Arab teenager in a village in the Palestinian Authority lightly injured by shrapnel. Tragically, the broader region did not escape unscathed; Iranian strikes targeting US allies resulted in the death of at least one person and several injuries in Dubai, while three soldiers were lightly injured at an air base in Kuwait.
A three-story apartment building in Ramat Gan sustained serious damage after being hit by shrapnel, but no one was injured, though rescue teams evacuated the residents due to safety concerns. A private house was also damaged by shrapnel in Petach Tikvah, but Baruch Hashem, the family members were in the shelter and were unharmed. Reports indicated shrapnel falling in many other locations, mainly in central Israel, causing property damage.
By Motzei Shabbos, IDF assessments indicated that about 150 ballistic missiles had been launched from Iran toward Israel in several limited barrages. Air defense systems successfully intercepted a number of the missiles, while others landed in open areas. The volleys were far smaller than those fired during the June 2025 war. It remains unclear whether the reduced scale stemmed from damage to Iran’s capabilities, the impact of the day’s initial strike, confusion within Iranian forces, or a combination of these factors.
The IDF spokesperson announced that about 200 fighter jets took part in what it described as its largest-ever attack, dropping hundreds of munitions on about 500 military targets across western and central Iran. The attack on Iran has been named Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Operation Epic Fury by the U.S. The IDF stated this strike severely degraded the regime’s offensive capabilities and allowed the expansion of the IAF’s aerial superiority over Iranian airspace.
Iran also launched missiles at US allies in the Middle East, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain. One person was killed, and several were injured in an attack in Dubai, and three soldiers were lightly injured in an attack on the Ali al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
