On Shabbos, the Russian military launched hundreds of missiles and drones toward densely populated cities across Ukraine. Over 100 missiles and suicide drones were fired on the city of Dnipro, known as the “capital of Ukrainian Jewry,” and one of the missiles struck the upper floor of an apartment building in the city center, home to the Rebbe’s shluchim Rabbi Moshe and Shoshi Weber.
The blast claimed the lives of two people and left dozens injured. The Webers’ apartment sustained partial damage, but miraculously, the family emerged completely unharmed.
Rabbi Weber, one of the veteran shluchim in Ukraine, heads Kolel Torah, a global network of organized Torah study kollelim, particularly active throughout Europe and the former Soviet Union, with more than 5,000 participants.
According to Rabbi Weber, “We experienced an incredible miracle this Shabbos. The missile hit our building, the balcony and part of our apartment were damaged, but baruch Hashem, we are totally fine and unscathed. The upper portion of the building caught fire, and the fire alarm systems activated. We had to flee into the street with the children in the middle of the night, still in our pajamas.
“We stayed outside with the kids for several hours until the fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze. Once they determined the building was not at risk of collapse, we were allowed to return home. Everything is fine now. It was a miracle completely beyond the natural order.”
He added, “I attribute the miracle to the zechus of our shlichus here, which we carry out with mesiras nefesh. We had only just returned a few days ago from Poland, where we ran a summer camp for hundreds of Jewish children from Ukraine. It was far from easy to come back, from the peace and quiet of Poland straight into a war zone. But as shluchim of the Rebbe, this is our life. We are here for every single Jew who needs us.”
Regarding the neighbors who were killed, he said: “Our hearts ache for our dear neighbors who were injured and killed. Together with the local Jewish community, the largest established community in Ukraine, we are doing everything we can to help.”
Rabbi Meir Stambler, Chairman of the Jewish Communities of Ukraine, who has also lived in Dnipro with his family since the 1990s, shared: “It was a very difficult night in Dnipro. I don’t remember such intense and widespread bombing, even though missiles are launched at us several times a week, since the war began three and a half years ago. In recent months, there has clearly been a serious escalation, and we civilians are feeling it firsthand.”
He added, “This is the second time in the past month that a shliach has been saved miraculously. Just two weeks ago, a drone struck the car of Rabbi Yossi Wolf, the rov of Kherson, and baruch Hashem, he too was unharmed. It is high time this war comes to an end, and that the terror which continues to take the lives of innocent civilians and soldiers each week be stopped.
“The Rebbe’s shluchim are here, no matter what, to help every Jew, both physically and spiritually. It’s not easy. It’s challenging. But we don’t abandon our shlichus. We continue to daven for peace and for the coming of Moshiach, speedily.”
