Today, 17 Elul, in the year 5556/1796, is the day that the Alter Rebbe”s shliach visited Anipoli to receive the haskomos (approbations) on the Tanya. Both Tzaddikim, Rav Zushe of Anipoli, and Rav Yehuda Leib Hakohen, author of the Or Haganuz, lived in Anipoli. They were both colleagues of the Alter Rebbe and talmidim of the Mezritcher Maggid.
That year, 17 Elul was on a Tuesday as well, as is visible from the fact that Rav Yehuda Leib made note of the fact that it was the day שהוכפל בו כי טוב, Tuesday, on which Hashem saw twice during the days of creation that it was good. It was also the same parsha – Ki Savo.
Rav Yehuda Leib signs the year as שנת פדותינ”ו which equals 556 = תקנ”ו. Some have noted that this coming year, תש”פ, is the acronym of תהא שנת פדותינו.
