What is the essence of Chai Elul?
In 1984, the Rebbe shared a remarkable story that illustrates the profound significance of Chai Elul in practical terms. During a Farbrengen on this date, The Rebbe recounted an inspiring tale about the Alter Rebbe: “Once, when he was traveling to or from Mezritch, the Alter Rebbe passed through a town known for its opposition to Chassidus. Undeterred, he entered the local shul, went up to the platform, and began to sing his unique melody: ‘Ta’amu U’reu Ki Tov Havieh; Farzucht vet Ir Zen Az Der Aibershter is Gut’ (‘Taste and see that the Hashem is good)!
The impact of the Alter Rebbe’s melody was immediate and profound. The townspeople, who had previously resisted Chassidus, were deeply moved. Many of the young people followed him, eager to learn more. Ultimately they became devoted Chassidim, spreading the teachings themselves.
The Rebbe emphasized an important lesson from this story:
“This tale, passed down through generations, underscores a vital principle. It teaches us the importance of spreading the teachings of Chassidus far and wide, regardless of challenges. The Alter Rebbe’s approach serves as a model for how every Chassid and student of Chassidus should actively engage in disseminating these teachings. It demonstrates how dedication to Chassidus can inspire others to embrace and promote it.”
