The Rogatchover’s Novel Take on the Time for Burning Chometz This Year

In honor of Pesach, the Tzfunot Institute, headed by Rabbi Binyomin Bitton, presents an essay adapted from the teachings of the Rogatchover on the timing of burning the chametz when erev Pesach falls on a Shabbos, with a novel reading of a Mishna.

In honor of Pesach, the Tzfunot Institute, headed by Rabbi Binyomin Bitton, is pleased to present an essay adapted from the teachings of the Rogatchover.

The article, which unravels and simplifies the depths of the Rogachover’s insights in a clear and easy fashion, is based on a few lines in Tzafnas Paneach al HaRambam of the Rogatchover, discussing the timing of burning the chametz when erev Pesach falls on a Shabbos, such as this year.

Apparently, the matter is simple: this is a mishna mefureshes in maseches Pesachim!

However, the Rogatchover reveals a completely new understanding of the mishna, different than all the meforshim, including Rashi and the Bartenura, which changes the timing as well.

With this chiddush, even the Rambam should be ‘sung’ differently…

What turns out also is that according to the Rogatchover, the “minhag tov” mentioned in the Rishonim and the Shulchan Aruch, to burn the chametz on erev pesach at the regular time of every other year, is in fact sourced in the mishna itself!
