The reason for creation is Hashem’s desire for a dwelling place in the lowest realms. The physical world should be in a state of bittul, allowing the Infinite Light of Hashem to be revealed in it. This bittul is the goal, purpose and foundation of Torah and Mitzvos, as it says, “And Hashem commanded us to perform all these statutes, to
fear Hashem” (Devorim 6:24). For this reason the Torah and the Mitzvos were given to be fulfilled with physical objects, and to a soul within a corporeal body, in order to transform the existing matter to ‘nothingness’ [to lose its sense of independence, recognizing that nothing exists besides for Hashem Himself], thereby making it into a vessel for G-dliness.
טעם הבריאה בכלל ובריאת האדם בפרט ותכליתם הוא מפני
שנתאווה הקב”ה להיות לו דירה בתחתונים דוקא. היינו
שהתחתנונים (במעלה ומדריגה, כי לא שייך לפניו ית’ מעלה
ומטה במקום. והם) היש והחומר, יהיו בבחי’ ביטול, שעל ידי זה
שורה ומתגלה בהם אור ה’ אין סוף ב”ה. וביטול זה הוא תכלית
ויסוד התורה והמצוה וכמ”ש (דברים ו, כד) ויצוונו ה’ לעשות את
כל החוקים האלה ליראה את ה’. זהו שהתורה והמצות ניתנו
למטה, בדברים גשמיים ולנשמה כשהיא מלובשת בגוף גשמי
דוקא, כדי שיהפכו היש לאין ויעשוהו כלי לאלקות.
