At 2 a.m. Sunday morning, households across the United States will move their clocks an hour back, shedding off the Daylight Saving Times and setting time to Standard Time.
With this shift, it’s going to be getting lighter earlier in the morning and darker earlier in the evening. With Sof Zeman Krias Shema relying on the Halachic hours of the day, the time by which the morning Shema must be recited, will be coming in an hour earlier each day. The ‘sof zman,’ the end time by which time shema must be recited is calculated is 3 shaos zmaniyos, 3 proportional hours from the beginning of the halachic day.
The same is true for other zmanim such as Chatzos, midday, and shkiah, sunset, which have various halachic implications and will come one hour earlier.
Although many will endeavor to perform the mitzvos at their earliest opportunity, it is important to be aware of the end time, to make sure not to miss it, particularly with Shema which is a mitzva min haTorah.
For reference, in Brooklyn, NY, the latest time for Shema will be tomorrow at 9:01 am, Chatzos will be at 11:38 am, and Shkiah at 4:49 pm.
