The monthly publication for shochtim titled “Ratzoh V’shuv” has released additional issues on the halacha, minhagim, and practical guidance in the world of shechita. Produced by shochet Rabbi Eliyahu Ezagui, the publication aims to strengthen awareness of the Rebbe’s horaos in this area.
The publication includes letters from the Rebbe, stories and anecdotes, practical tips, fascinating questions and answers, and in-depth halachic articles.
The Elul issue covers the challenges facing shechita today — government interference, halachic precision, community standards, and more. One letter from the Rebbe states that “the preparation for shechita is also part of shechita,” rejecting any outside intrusion into halacha. Stories highlight a shochet dismissed for wearing new boots, the Rebbe’s sharp words about one who became “like the oxen” he handled, and women in Soviet Russia risking everything to secure kosher food. Alongside are the Alter Rebbe’s takanos for hashgacha and the minhagim of Chabad shochtim.
The Tishrei issue turns to the ancient minhag of kaparos — its mention in Shulchan Aruch, debates of the poskim, and the Rebbe’s directive not to omit the opinions against kaparos from seforim. Letters and maanos of the Rebbe stress showing the chalaf to rabbonim, with an anecdote of the Frierdiker Rebbe suddenly examining a knife against sunlight to emphasize that every detail matters. The issue continues with the shochet’s role as more than just a title and with insights into the meaning of the word chalef.
The two issues also include many more features, such as stories of mesirus nefesh of Jews risking their lives under harsh regimes to preserve mehadrin shechita, fascinating questions and answers, and much more.
