Sale of Chometz in Crown Heights Will Only Be Online

The Rabbonim of the Crown Heights Badatz will be conducting the sale of chometz online this year, and not in person, as a precaution against the coronavirus.

For the first time, the Rabbonim of the Crown Height Beis Din will not allow community members to come in person to conduct the sale of their chometz, and will instead be conducting the sale online.

“Normally, we are meticulous (mehader) to meet the Rabbi in person and formally authorize him to arrange the sale for us,” they said.

“However, in this medical emergency it is impossible to set up a safe system for in-person Sale of Chometz without endangering the community further. The Rabbonim have therefore instructed that all Mechiras Chometz this year shall be by electronic authorization.”

The online sale can be done through a dedicated page on the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) website. The site gives the option to choose which Rov one would like to conduct his sale.

In addition, in keeping with the minhag to pay the Rov who conducts one’s mechiras chometz, the site gives an option to financially support the rabbonim through PayPal, CashApp or by mail.

The public was asked to submit the form online before Tuesday Night, eve of 14 Nissan April 7, 2020 at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
