Rustic Chabad House Opens Where George Washington Sipped Tea
Chabad of Flatbush celebrated a joyous Chanukas Habayis, inaugurating a beautiful center in the historic Wyckoff-Bennett Homestead. During the Revolutionary War, the property served as a base for soldiers, and local tradition holds that George Washington once stopped there for tea.
A joyous Chanukas Habayis was held last Sunday at the new location for Chabad of Flatbush, located in the historic Wyckoff-Bennett Homestead.
The homestead itself carries deep American roots: during the Revolutionary War, the property served as a base for soldiers, and local tradition holds that George Washington once stopped there for tea.
In the courtyard of the historic property stands an old stable loft, which has now been beautifully transformed into a rustic Chabad House. This unique space preserves the charm and authenticity of the original structure while serving as a vibrant center for Jewish life.
Friends, community members, fellow shluchim, and neighbors gathered on the sprawling property as Rabbi Zalman Liberow, the Rebbe’s first Shliach to Flatbush, opened the evening with heartfelt remarks. He reflected on the miracles unfolding in Eretz Yisrael and compared the ribbon-cutting to Ufaratzta — breaking the boundaries and spreading forth Torah and Chassidus in preparation for the arrival of Moshiach.
A highlight of the celebration was the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Honorees included some of our generous supporters, Dr. Mark Lew, Head of Pediatrics at Methodist Hospital; David (Dmitry) Salita, former professional boxer and lifelong student of Rabbi Liberow; and Mrs. Stavrach, widow of Eliot Stavrach – whose generous contribution enabled the purchase of the property.
The evening continued with lively dancing led by Mendy Kraus, a kids’ zone with inflatables, cotton candy, and popcorn, and a police presence that allowed several officers to put on tefillin with yeshiva bochurim.
Guests also enjoyed a lavish dairy meal upstairs in the beautiful event space. The meal was generously sponsored by Mrs. Rivka Freeman in memory of her mother.
