Rooftop Sniper Descends for Tefillin at Jewish Heritage Day
Jewish pride came alive at this year’s Jewish Heritage Day in Fort Myers, Florida. After 50 men donned tefillin, Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz offered a nearby sniper to do the mitzvah.
Under the warm Florida sun and open skies, Jewish pride came alive in a powerful and uplifting way at this year’s Jewish Heritage Day, hosted by the Jewish Federation of Lee & Charlotte Counties. Guided by the passionate leadership of Debbie Sanford, together with her dedicated assistant Amy, the event beautifully blended community, culture, and tradition in a way that left a lasting impression on all who attended.
The vibrant outdoor gathering was further elevated by the devoted efforts of Rabbi Yitzchok and Shani Minkowicz, Shluchim of Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida. Their presence brought authentic Jewish warmth and hands-on mitzvah opportunities to the heart of the event.
Attendees were treated to a full Glatt Kosher culinary experience, featuring mouthwatering falafel, sizzling burgers, shawarma, fresh salads, and crispy French fries.
Mrs. Shani Minkowicz shared the mitzvah of Neshek, distributing Shabbat candles to women and encouraging the light of Jewish homes to shine even brighter, while Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz inspired over 50 Jewish men to don Tefillin. Some shared that the last time they had put on Tefillin was at the Kosel.
Yet, the most unforgettable moment came from above.
As the event was under the watchful eye of local law enforcement, a sheriff’s sniper stationed atop a nearby building was identified as Jewish. Without hesitation, Rabbi Minkowicz reached out with an invitation: “Would you like to put on Tefillin?” The response was immediate and heartfelt, yes.
In a moment of Jewish unity and pride, the sniper descended, wrapped Tefillin, and was soon joined by his fellow officers. They then gathered together for a picture, standing tall in their shared Jewish identity.
