In a rare and significant event, the mitzvah of Pidyon Peter Chamor, the redemption of a firstborn donkey, was fulfilled in the moshav of Talmei Yechiel, near Kiryat Malachi. The pidyon was overseen by Rabbi Zvadia Cohen from the Tel Aviv Rabbinical Court.
The unique mitzvah, which is seldom performed, attracted participants from the local community and beyond, eager to witness this uncommon ritual. There to engage with the crowd, was Rabbi Eliyahu Ezagui, the international Lubavitcher shochet, who set up a tefillin stand and did mivtzoim with the many participants.
The two mitzvos are notable connected as they are both mentioned in the parsha of Kadesh Li which is written inside the tefillin, and both mitzvos are associated with the exodus from Mitzrayim. As is known, donkeys carried the tremendous wealth of the Yidden when they left Mitzrayim, and tefillin serve as a reminder of the great miracles Hashem performed at that time.
