Raised Since 11 Days Old, Orphan Brings Light to Odessa

Amid sirens and uncertainty, a boy who was brought to a Jewish orphanage as an 11-day-old infant celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in Odessa – declaring a powerful victory of life over war, and offering a heartfelt tefillah for Eretz Yisroel and its soldiers.

While the world has grown accustomed to reports of ongoing war in Ukraine, one uplifting moment in the embattled city of Odessa briefly pushed aside the fear and tension.

Avraham, whose life story is deeply intertwined with the Jewish orphanage “Mishpacha Ukraine,” celebrated his Bar Mitzvah this week in an event that became a powerful display of hope, emunah, and continuity.

His journey began 13 years ago, when he was abandoned and brought to the community’s care at just 11 days old. Since then, the orphanage has been the only home he has ever known. This week, dressed in his Yom Tov finest and donning tefillin for the first time, Avraham stood at the center of a beautiful simcha hall in Odessa, surrounded by hundreds of friends, mechanchim, and community members who watched him grow up.

Even as echoes of war could be heard outside, inside the hall, 124 children from the orphanage danced and sang songs of emunah and simcha.

“Avraham is not just becoming a Bar Mitzvah,” one of his teachers shared emotionally. “He is living proof that even when the world around us is burning, we continue to build, to grow, and to raise the next generation.”

Rabbi Avraham Wolff, Chief Rabbi of Odessa and Southern Ukraine, together with his wife Rebbetzin Chaya Wolff, have been with Avraham since the day he arrived as a tiny infant. For them, this moment marked a deeply personal and communal milestone.

“When a child comes to us at 11 days old and grows up here to become a Bar Mitzvah – through years of war and uncertainty – it is nothing short of a miracle,” they said. “To see him standing there, filled with joy, is the greatest bracha we could ask for.”

The most moving moment of the evening came when the Bar Mitzvah bochur addressed the crowd.

Avraham chose to use his special moment not for himself, but to offer a heartfelt tefillah – for peace and victory not only in Ukraine, but also for Eretz Yisroel and the soldiers of the IDF.

Despite the ongoing economic and security challenges, the Jewish community of Odessa once again demonstrated its unwavering strength and refusal to be broken.

“A Bar Mitzvah is a declaration of continuity,” Rabbi Wolff shared. “In a place where others try to sow destruction, we plant life and a future.”

As the evening came to a close and the children returned to the protected orphanage building, Avraham’s message continued to resonate: even as the war enters its fifth year, the light of Yiddishkeit shines strong—growing, thriving, and overcoming against all odds.
