Rabbi Yaakov Bergman, a longtime member of Anash in Yerushalayim, an expert in kashrus who founded the cheder in Ramot and was a devoted member of the Chevra Kadisha, passed away on Wednesday, 24 Shevat.
He was 79 years old.
He was born in Yerushalayim in 5708 (1947) to R’ Yosef Moshe and Chana Yehudis Bergman. He married his wife Miriam, the daughter of Rabbi Yoel Fleishman.
In his youth, he was among the activists who facilitated the transmission of the Rebbe’s farbrengens via hookups from Lod to Yerushalayim.
For decades, he managed Bergman Catering, but he was equally known for his volunteer work. Dedicated to mivtza kashrus, together with his friends R’ Zvi Vigler and R’ Avraham Porush, he spent years voluntarily kashering kitchens for others and teaching many young men the laws of kashering.
He was a familiar and beloved figure at the Chabad Shul in his neighborhood of Ramot and was one of the founders of the local cheder.
He was also a renowned expert in the unique customs of the Chevra Kadisha of Yerushalayim.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Miriam Bergman, and their children: Rabbi Shimon Bergman – Nizhny Novgorod, Russia; Rabbi Shmuel Bergman – Ramot, Yerushalayim; Mrs. Segal – Beitar Illit; Mrs. Shur – London; Mrs. Weisberg – Moscow; and Mrs. Tamar Salamon – Sofia, Bulgaria; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
