Rabbi Shlomo Aharon Henig, an expert Sofer in Yerushalayim who merited to receive special guidance from the Rebbe, and was entrusted with writing the Children’s Sefer Torah, passed away.
Rabbi Shlomo Aharon Henig, an expert Sofer in Yerushalayim who was entrusted with writing the Children’s Sefer Torah and merited to receive special guidance from the Rebbe regarding his work as a sofer, passed away Wednesday, 1 Sivan, 5781.
He was 80 years old.
Rabbi Henig was a prominent member of the Chabad community in Yerushalayim and served as a board member of Yeshivas Toras Emes.
He was a world-renowned expert in the field of safrus, and in the Alter Rebbe‘s ksav in particular. He taught generations of young scribes to write in the style developed by the Alter Rebbe.
On the Yud Alef Nissan 5741, during a farbrengen celebrating the Rebbe’s 79th birthday, the Rebbe called for writing a Sefer Torah to unite all Jewish children and would bring about a special blessing for the Jewish people as a whole. Rabbi Henig was the sofer entrusted with writing the Sefer Torah.
When the first Children’s Torah Scroll was set to be completed for the yahrzeit of the Rebbe’s father on Chof Av, the Rebbe appointed Rabbi Zalman Shimon Dworkin, rov of Crown Heights as his personal representative to write the final letter in the Torah on his behalf.
As soon as the first Children’s Torah was completed, the Rebbe called for writing a second Sefer Torah, and then a third. To date, six Children’s Sifrei Torah have been written, representing nearly two million children.
Rabbi Henig merited to receive special guidance from the Rebbe regarding his work as a sofer, and on many occasions, the Rebbe referred Chassidim to him to have their tefillin checked.
He is survived by his wife, Bracha Henig, and their children, Mrs. Devorah Rabinowitz – Kiryat Gat; Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Henig – Yerushalayim; Mrs. Shoshana (Rosa) Levkivker – Tzfas, Rabbi Tzvi Henig – Yerushalayim; Mrs. Esther Yeruslavsky – Nachlas Har Chabad; Rabbi Schneur Zalman Henig – Kfar Chabad; Mrs. Miriam Mishulovin – Nachlas Har Chabad; Rabbi Sholom Ber Henig – Tzfas; Rabbi Mordechai Henig – Kfar Chabad; Mrs. Gitty Hakohen – Beitar Illit; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The levaya was held today in Yerushalayim.
