R’ Moshe Pesach Goldman, longtime member and chairman of Tzach of New York, and a teacher at Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Ocean Parkway for over 60 years, where he shaped thousands of students, passed away on Tuesday, 16 Elul.
He was 96 years old.
R’ Moshe Pesach was born in 5689 (1929) in Brownsville, NY, to his parents R’ Shaul and Chana Goldman. His father was a tailor by trade, and despite the extreme challenges America posed to frum Jews, he always kept Shabbos even in the harshest days of the Great Depression.
Although his parents did not come from a chassidishe background, they raised him with a deep sense of emunas tzadikim. He would recall that when the Frierdiker Rebbe arrived in the United States, all the Jewish newspapers carried the story along with a picture of the Frierdiker Rebbe. His mother cut out the photo for safekeeping, saying, “He has a holy face.”
While many of his friends went to public school, his parents were determined to enroll him in a Yeshiva. He began his studies at the Toras Chaim Yeshiva in East New York, and for 8th grade, he made the switch to Tomchei Temimim at 770 Eastern Parkway.
He began studying at 770 in Elul of 5702 (1942) and immediately developed a close attachment to the Frierdiker Rebbe.
He and another bochur would walk in from East Flatbush whenever there was even a slight chance of seeing the Frierdiker Rebbe. He ended up attending many farbrengens and several Pesach sedorim, even though bochurim were officially not allowed in.
On one occasion, he came upstairs but hesitated before going inside. The Rebbe appeared and he asked for permission, to which the Rebbe responded, “די טיר איז אפן און מען פגעגט?!” On many other occasions, they were allowed in by either the Rebbe or the Rebbetzin.
After completing his studies, he was sent by the Rebbe, as part of a group of young men, to strengthen the newly established Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva in Chicago. His parents agreed to send him there, despite the fact that they weren’t chassidim, because that is what the Rebbe wanted.
On one occasion, his father went in for yechidus with the Rebbe and shared the many hardships he had endured in Europe and later in America. The Rebbe assured him that he would see much nachas from his son.
In 5713, he married Esther, the daughter of Rabbi Eliyahu Simpson, a renowned chossid who served as a choizer for the Rebbe Rashab and mazkir to the Frierdiker Rebbe. They were honored to have the Rebbe serve as the mesader kiddushin at their wedding, held at the Gold Manor hall in Brooklyn. The Rebbe also participated in the kabolas ponim and delivered two sichos to those gathered, later printed in Likkutei Sichos.
After his marriage, he began teaching the older students at Lubavitch Yeshiva on Ocean Parkway, a position he held for over 60 years, profoundly influencing generations of students. Since many students did not come from Chabad families, he had the privilege of accompanying many of them to their bar mitzvah yechidus.
At the farbrengen of Bais Iyar 5715 (1955), the Rebbe founded the Lubavitch Youth Organization (Tzach) to promote and implement all of the Rebbe’s initiatives involving hafotzas hamaayonos. R’ Moshe Pesach was appointed executive secretary, a role he held for nearly 60 years. After the passing of Rabbi Dovid Raskin a”h, he was appointed chairman.
He is survived by his wife, Esther, and their children: Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Goldman – Crown Heights, Chaya Perlow – Sydney, Australia, Kreini Shusterman – Cincinnati, Ohio, Rabbi Mendel Goldman – Los Angeles, California, Rabbi Yehoshua Binyamin Goldman – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Frumi Avtzon – Crown Heights, and Dini Eidelman – Brunoy, France.
He was predeceased by his son Avraham Eliezer (Avremi) Goldman HYD in 5737 (1977).
The levaya will pass 770 at 10:45 am on the way to kevurah near the Rebbe’s Ohel.
Boruch dayan hoemes.
When he started teaching it was NOT on Ocean Parkway, which first opened in the late 60’s
He was a teacher at 9 Grant Square, known as Bedford and Dean and in the late 60’s the yeshiva moved to Ocean Parkway
