R’ Moshe Khusid, who went from being a director in Soviet puppet theater to producing an authentic Jewish film and being mekarev Yidden to Yiddishkeit in Michigan, passed away on Friday, Erev Rosh Hashanah, 29 Elul, 5783.
He was 76 years old.
Born in Germany, Moshe studied in the famous Leningrad School of Film and Theater, and worked as a director in Soviet puppet theater during the 1970s and 1980s. He later utilized the skills he learned to produce ‘Purim: The Lot‘, an authentic Jewish film on the story of Purim in 2012. The story of his transformation was so inspiring that another filmmaker produced a mini-documentary about him, titled From Puppets to Purim.
After emigrating to the USA, R’ Moshe and his family moved to Oak Park, Michigan. There, he worked for F.R.E.E. of Michigan, giving shiurim ad hosting events.
During his years in Michigan, he was mekarev tens of Russian Yidden to Yiddishkeit.
He is survived by his wife Talya and their children Leah Gotzel – Kishinev, Moldova; Chana Liba Braun – Brooklyn, NY; and Yechiel Khusid.
