R’ Leibel New, a respected member of the Anash community in Melbourne, Australia, passed away on Wednesday morning, 8 Tishrei.
He was 91 years old.
Born in 1934 to R’ Yisroel and Rivkah New, Leibel was the first Australian-born bochur to learn in Tomchei Temimim in the chassidishe shtetl of Shepparton, Australia. After marrying his wife, Chana, they were among the early pioneers who helped establish the anash community in Melbourne.
He is survived by his children: R’ Avremi New – Crown Heights, R’ Chezky New – Melbourne, R’ Sholom New – Crown Heights, R’ Yitzchok New – Melbourne, Mrs. Rivka Raskin – Melbourne.
He is also survived by his brother, R’ Mendel New.
The Levaya will take place on Thursday at the Lyndhurst Cemetery in Melbourne.
R’ Avremi New and R’ Sholom New will be sitting Shiva at 1373 President St. in Crown Heights. Shacharis: 8:30 am, 9:30 am. Mincha: 5:45 pm, 6:00 pm. Maariv: Bzmana. On Friday, Mincha will be at 3:15 pm.
