‘Purim in Kharkiv’ Theme Brings City’s Icons to Life

This year, Purim in Kharkiv was celebrated in a uniquely Kharkiv way, reflecting the spirit of the city itself. Iconic symbols of the city were transformed to highlight the mitzvos of Purim.

The city of Kharkiv and its Jewish community are well known throughout Ukraine and around the world for their resilience and strength — not only surviving four years of war and life on the frontlines, but continuing to grow and emerge even stronger.

This year, Purim was celebrated in a uniquely Kharkiv way — a true “Purim in Kharkiv” theme that reflected the spirit of the city itself. Iconic symbols of the city were transformed to highlight the mitzvos of Purim. Subway stations became reminders of Mishloach Manot — “Metro Mishloach Manot.” The post office distributed 1,000 mishloach manot packages. The “PurimBank” featured tzedakah boxes, emphasizing the mitzvah of giving.

Even the city’s well-known “Punkt Nezlamanosti” (Unbreakable Points) — safe spaces used throughout Kharkiv when electricity and heat are unavailable — became centers of spiritual strength. Hundreds of men and boys put on tefillin, while women and girls received neshek (Shabbos candle kits), symbolizing the need to recharge not only physically but spiritually — to illuminate the world through Shabbos candles and mitzvos.

Many participants dressed as the volunteers, builders, and aid workers who have become local heroes — the people who clean, repair, and rebuild after rocket and missile strikes. Their costumes paid tribute to the everyday courage and dedication that define the city.

Rabbi Moshe Moskovitz spoke about the pride of being part of such a strong, special, and resilient city. He concluded with the prayer of Shema Yisrael, asking for the safety of our brothers and sisters in Israel and for peace to come speedily to Ukraine.

Nikita Steren, representing the Mayor of Kharkiv, highlighted the extraordinary work of the Jewish community in assisting those in need throughout the city.

During the lively Megillah reading, the sound of groggers drowned out every mention of Haman’s name, followed by a joyous and festive Seudas Purim filled with song, unity, and celebration.

It was truly an unforgettable Purim — celebrated in an unbreakable city, by an unbreakable community.
