Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal sent warm wishes to Chief Rabbi of Kiev Rabbi Yonatan Markowitz on the occasion of his birthday.
In his congratulatory letter, the Prime Minister referenced the Rebbe’s often repeated words that on the day of one’s birthday that person’s mazal is strengthened
“In Judaism, a birthday is a special date when prayer is sure to be heard by the Almighty, and a person’s destiny changes for the better, promising him even more happiness and vitality. May today give you renewal and strength for a successful and joyful year,” the Prime Minister wrote.
He went on to highlight the rabbi’s contribution to Ukrainian society writing “Your active religious and social activities, educational and youth initiatives, assistance to the needy and the elderly deserve the most sincere words of gratitude and serve as a model for all those who have defined the meaning of their lives to serve the community and our country.”
Just a few weeks ago, the Ukrainian Parliament awarded its highest honor to Rabbi Markovitch. That marked the first time in the country’s history that a Jewish religious leader was bestowed with this award.
