Photographer Mordechai Lubecki spent two days in Mumbai, India, documenting Jewish life and the activities of the local Chabad centers.

Six shuls were visited during the trip, out of the dozens that exist across the city, reflecting the rich Jewish history of Mumbai. At the heart of Jewish life today stands the large Chabad House, directed by Rabbi Haim Uri together with Mrs. Chaya Mushka Bloy.

The multi-story building serves as a central hub for the city’s Jews. On the first floor is a kosher restaurant that welcomes both local Jews and international travelers. The second floor contains a shul, where daily tefillos and Shabbos davening are held. The fourth, fifth, and sixth floors house a museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Yidden in India.

Not far from the Chabad House is a mikvah, providing further for the needs of the community and travelers.

Mumbai itself is a city of contrasts, combining modern infrastructure with cultural vibrancy. The airport is beautiful and modern, taxis are inexpensive, and both English and Hindi are widely spoken, making the city accessible for visitors. For those flying to India, Emirates Airlines offers kosher meals, ensuring that observant Jews can travel with peace of mind.
