Less than two weeks ago, Rabbi Tzvi Kogan, a 28-year-old shliach in Abu Dhabi, was senselessly murdered by terrorists, a loss that has deeply impacted the global Jewish community. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief and solidarity, with thousands coming together to honor his memory by performing mitzvahs during his shivah mourning period.
Performing mitzvahs in response to tragedy is a practice emphasized by the Rebbe as a means to channel grief into positive action. For the Kogan family, this meant encouraging the global Jewish community to honor his memory through meaningful acts of Torah and Mitzvos. In response, over 40,000 mitzvahs were performed and shared on a dedicated on a dedicated OneMitzvah page.
Over 4,000 participants from more than 200 locations undertook a diverse range of mitzvahs to honor Rabbi Kogan’s memory. For example, Esther Bogatin pledged to be more mindful of her speech, committing to infuse her words with “shalom” in the coming days, adding peace to her community during this time of loss.
Carissa Braun, a grandmother, chose to impart spirituality to her grandchildren by teaching them prayers. Ellyn Egenberg committed to reciting the Shema before sleep each night, dedicating her prayers to Rabbi Kogan’s soul.
“Our hearts and the hearts of all Jews around the world are with the Kogan family during this unimaginable time,” said Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, Executive Director of Merkos 302 and Chairman of OneMitzvah. “The tremendous outpouring of support from so many individuals of all backgrounds honoring Rabbi Tzvi’s memory has been deeply moving.”
