Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that New York state will now allow religious gatherings of up to 10 people, making minyanim once again possible.
As the number of people infected by COVID-19 continues to decline, Cuomo announced at his daily coronavirus briefing Wednesday that starting Thursday, religious gatherings of up to 10 people will be allowed, provided that all participants wear a mask and social-distancing guidelines are followed.
“At this time of stress,” said the governor, “when people are so anxious and so confused, I think those religious ceremonies can be very comforting, but we need to find out how to do it, and do it safely and to do it smartly. The last thing we want to do is have a religious ceremony that winds up having more people infected.”
Drive-in/parking-lot services will also be permitted.
Senator Simcha Felder issued the following statement for immediate release:
“Prayer services are integral to every religious community. We worked diligently to allow minyanim in our shuls. I want to thank Governor Cuomo for announcing today that religious services are permitted.”
