Mrs. Gittel Rosenberg A”H – Updated

By Anash.org Staff

With great sadness, we report the passing of Mrs. Gittel Rosenberg A”H of Montreal and Tverya. She was the widow of Reb Yishai Rosenberg, and passed away on Friday the 5th of Iyar, 5779.

Mrs. Gittel Rosenberg, an educator from a very young age and a businesswoman who never forgot that helping others was most important in life – a pioneer in Chabad outreach activities in Canada and Eretz Yisroel, passed away in New York.

She was 86.

Mrs. Rosenberg was born to her parents Reb Moshe and Feiga Menya Silverstein, in Montreal in 5692/1932. Although Montreal was lacking in formal Jewish education for girls her home and community provided the environment needed for her to become a proud Jewish girl and woman.

At the age of sixteen, Rav Pinchus Hirschprung saw in her the young, devoted woman he needed to start his new school, Bais Yaakov, in Montreal. She devoted the next twenty years of her life to educating the first and second generations of survivors. Her excitement and love for Yiddishkeit and her warm, loving nature helped raise the generation that had seen such horror and build warm Jewish homes.

In 5711/1951, Gittel met and married Yishai Hakohen Rosenberg (Kohn) – a young man who survived the horrors of Auschwitz, and together they established a home that was a true example of Torah and chassidishkeit.

In her 30’s she began working as a stockbroker in corporate Canada. There she was an example of a strong, knowledgeable woman who was refined and modest and who never ceased to make a kiddush hashem with her behavior and love and kindness toward others. There too, she reached out to those who were less affiliated and brought the warmth of Torah to those who had not yet discovered it.

Mrs. Rosenberg helped found the Montreal organization that assisted widows and orphans of fallen Israeli soldiers. She and Rebbetzin Golda Schwei a”h were active participants in the Jewish Institute for Brides and Grooms, a Montreal organization, educating soon-to-be-married Jewish couples about the observance of Taharas Hamishpachah.

Mrs. Rosenberg was active all her life in N’shei Chabad, both in Canada and Eretz Yisroel; N’shei work never ceased to inspire her.

About 30 years ago she and her husband went up to Eretz Yisroel, settling in the Galilee city of Tverya. Reb Yishai went back to learning full-time in kolel and Mrs. Rosenberg threw herself into organizing peulos for women.

In recent years she had been living near her children in New York.

She is survived by her three children, Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Rosenberg (Montreal, Quebec), Rabbi Avrohom Asher Rosenberg (Monsey, NY), and Mrs. Shaindy Schapiro (Crown Heights).
