On Wednesday morning, Mr. Dadi (Dovid) Barnea, head of the Mossad, made his first-ever visit to the Rebbe’s Ohel. Barnea was welcomed by Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Carlebach, director of Chabad at Rutgers University, and his son, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Carlebach, who serves as a chaplain for the airports and law enforcement agencies in New Jersey.
Mr. Barnea, born in Ashkelon and raised in Rishon L’Tzion, is the son of Yosef Barnea (originally Bruner), who fled Nazi Germany as a young child with his parents, Reb Yehuda Bruner – later honored as one of the founders of Torah life in Bnei Brak – and Rebbetzin Bina, a cousin of the Belzer Rebbe and sister of the Rebbe of Mezhikov.
Since assuming leadership of the Mossad nearly five years ago, Mr. Barnea has overseen some of Israel’s most sensitive operations, including penetrating deep into Iran, striking terrorist infrastructure, and carrying out targeted actions against key figures in hostile regimes and terror groups.
Among his many achievements in the current war are the dismantling of Hezbollah communication networks, the elimination of senior Hamas leaders both in Gaza and abroad, and the historic strikes inside Iran.
Mr. Barnea’s brother, Rabbi Zohar Barnea – a Breslover chossid who miraculously survived the Meron tragedy with his son – has also been involved both publicly and discreetly in securing Chabad shluchim and mosdos across the world.
Upon his arrival at the Chabad House near the Ohel, Mr. Barnea was escorted to a private room by Rabbi Abba Refson. There, he was given a dollar that had been distributed by the Rebbe during Sunday dollars, and was guided in writing a pan and how to do daven at the Ohel.
In the Ohel, Mr. Barnea spent time in heartfelt davening, visibly moved by the experience. Upon exiting the Ohel, he shared that it had been one of the most powerful and meaningful moments of his life. He noted that his tefillos included heartfelt prayers for the success and protection of Am Yisroel, Eretz Yisroel, and Jews in all corners of the world, along with the continued success of the Mossad’s secret work across the globe.
Following the Rebbe’s directive to public figures to place a tzedakah pushka in their offices, the shluchim offered Mr. Barnea a beautiful pushka to place in his office at the Mossad headquarters. He readily agreed and gratefully accepted the pushka.
