Two meetings were recently held with the Brooklyn CB 09 Transportation Committee to discuss issues with the proposed set of two-way bike lanes and the plan to remove over fifty parking spots in Crown Heights.

First Vice Chair Ethan Norville of the Department of Transportation hosted two bike lane feedback sessions to hear Crown Heights residents opinions on the proposal to add two-way bike lanes to Kingston and Brooklyn Avenue, and further lose over 50 parking spots in Crown Heights over it.

Some of the topics brought up at the meeting were the possible dangers of having a two-way bike lane on a one way street, where cars will not be aware to constantly look both ways and will put bikers in imminent danger. It also put pedestrians at risk, because they are not conditioned to look to the opposite way of oncoming traffic when they cross a one way street.

Another idea discussed was to add a Municipal Parking Garage on Clarkson Ave. to make up for the lost parking spots. If NYC is going to take away vital parking spots, it’s imperative that they build a municipal parking garage on Clarkson Ave. to accommodate the car overflow.

Lastly, the committee discussed the Citi-bike racks currently on Clarkson that are diagonal on it’s wide sidewalk.  The group suggested a condition for future removal of any street parking spots on removing existing Citi-bike racks from streets and relocate them onto wide sidewalks with diagonal positioning.

The issue is still being discussed, with future meetings planned for September as well.

As reported on Anash.org, Crown Heights residents can join the CB9 board to vote on these kinds of issues. Click here to learn more.

  1. In one ear out the other if it even entered The city will do what they want and no garage will be built we are getting the bike lanes losing spots getting the shelters and more druggies like it or not no one important to anyone in a position to do something cares. The only thing that matters is the Almighty dollar and lots of it. Picking our pockets to the max! Nothing more nothing less

    1. Most people don’t know this, but the school principals actually came to DOT and asked for the bike lanes to be installed.

It’s not actually the city just doing what it wants.
