Rabbi Mendel Notik, who served in the Rebbe’s house and assisted the Rebbetzin for many years, shared personal stories and memories with the bochurim from the Yeshiva in Chicago, offering a rare glimpse into the Rebbetzin’s character and the depth of her dedication to the Rebbe and the chassidim.
Rabbi Notik emphasized the Rebbetzin’s unwavering devotion. “She gave her entire life to the Rebbe,” he said, noting that she was his “number one and biggest supporter.” He described how she was always mindful of the Rebbe’s time, ensuring that the Rebbe could focus on his never ending tasks without distraction.
Beyond her devotion, the Rebbetzin was known for her humility and practical nature. Rabbi Notik recounted that she disliked waste, often giving away items that could still be used. She kept meticulous records of even small household expenses, such as bakery deliveries, and preferred to handle tasks herself rather than rely on others.
Despite living in a time without modern communications, the Rebbetzin was remarkably informed. She kept track of world events and the work of shluchim across the globe, demonstrating sharp intellect and awareness. Rabbi Notik shared that she was also an exceptional listener, always attentive to the needs and questions of those around her.
Rabbi Notik recalled the challenges the Rebbetzin and Rebbe faced during World War II, including their flight from Paris and the scarcity of basic necessities. He shared a story about the Rebbe’s efforts to find a single onion for the Pesach Seder and another about the Rebbe’s campaign to save Yidden by assisting them with hotel registrations during wartime.
On a lighter note, Rabbi Notik shared a humorous anecdote about the Rebbetzin attempting to give him a new tie, highlighting her caring but down-to-earth nature. He also showed the bochurim personal artifacts, including a special tile from the Rebbe’s house and a scarf made for the Rebbe by the Rebbetzin’s sister.
