On Tuesday evening, a delegation representing Lubavitch World Headquarters paid a condolence visit to the family of Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Executive Vice President of the Orthodox Union, who passed away suddenly on Shemini Atzeres at the age of 60.

The delegation was led by Rabbi Shmuel Kaplan, Head Shliach of the State of Maryland and senior member of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, together with Rabbi Efraim Mintz, Executive Director of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). They were joined by area Shluchim Rabbi Elchonon Lisbon, Rabbi Yaakov Kaplan, Rabbi Sholom Zirkind, and Rabbi Sholom Reindorp, along with Rabbi Levi Nejar, Menahel of Yeshivas Lubavitch of Baltimore, and Rabbi Elchonon Chaikin, CEO of Cheder Chabad of Baltimore.

Since assuming his role at the Orthodox Union, Rabbi Hauer developed a close appreciation for the Rebbe’s Shluchim across the globe. He became a genuine friend and admirer of their work, particularly those serving in the former Soviet Union, often remarking on their courage and dedication in rekindling Jewish life under difficult circumstances.

A leader deeply devoted to the welfare of all Jews, Rabbi Hauer’s heart was open to every member of Klal Yisrael, regardless of background or affiliation. In recent years, he dedicated extraordinary effort to assisting the Jewish communities of Ukraine through the Shluchim network, personally raising significant funds to support their humanitarian and spiritual efforts. In keeping with his humility, he sought no recognition for this work and continued his assistance long after the headlines had moved on.

The Lubavitch delegation was warmly received by Mr. Zevi Walman, a prominent member of the OU board and a close friend of Chabad, who joined in reflecting on Rabbi Hauer’s legacy of compassion, leadership, and unity.

May the memory of Rabbi Moshe Hauer, a man of vision, humility, and deep Ahavas Yisrael, be a blessing and an enduring inspiration to all who were touched by his life and leadership.
