Ink Jetted Codes Identify Kosher Skittles

While some Skittles varieties are kosher pareve, others are not. The OU says that for now, only a few select codes identify kosher Skittles candies, and this will remain the only way to know until the hechsher starts appearing on the packaging.

Bright, fruity, and chewy, Skittles are one of the most popular candies in the world, enjoyed by millions who “taste the rainbow” each year. Now, the Orthodox Union has clarified the kosher status of these sweets.

They explained that “some Skittles are certified kosher pareve even when not bearing the OU symbol, others are not.” To determine if a product is certified, the OU directed consumers to check the ink-jetted codes printed on each package.

“If the production code contains ‘YRV,’” they stated, “or contains ‘WAC’ and has a best-buy date of June 2026 or later, then those products are certified kosher by the Orthodox Union.”

They added, “Only packages with these codes are certified kosher pareve, even if the OU mark is not on the label.”

This clarification applies to various sizes and varieties of Skittles produced by Mars Wrigley.
