In a recently published clip of a farbrengen, Reb Yoel Kahn addresses the Lubavitch approach to Purim, not for jesting and drunkenness, but a day of uplifting joy.

Reb Yoel told a story of a man who did not want to engage in indulgent eating, so he would wait all week for Shabbos when he could indulge “for the sake of a mitzvah.” Similarly, there are those who wait all year long to let loose and drink. But that is not the Chabad way.

By the Rebbe, Reb Yoel said, Purim was a serious day. Joyful, but serious.
