Hatzalah Shares Chanukah Saftey Tips

Crown Heights Hatzalah shares with the community some Chanukah safety tips for when lighting the Menorah and what to do in case a fire happens.

SAFETY BULLETIN FROM CROWN HEIGHTS HATZALAH

PREVENTION

  • Place your menorah on a steady, sturdy, non-flammable surface, or cover the surface with aluminum foil.
  • DO NOT leave flammable items near the menorah.
  • DO NOT place the menorah near curtains or any other objects that can catch on fire.
  • DO NOT place the menorah in an area where it can be knocked over by a passing person.
  • DO NOT place the menorah or leave matches/lighters within reach of small children.
  • NEVER LEAVE THE MENORAH UNATTENDED.
Allow all flames to burn out before leaving home or going to bed.
  • KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER NEARBY.
Oil fires cannot be extinguished with water.
  • Make sure you have working smoke detectors on every floor.
  • Arts-and-Crafts menorahs are often made with flammable material; use them with unlit candles.
  • FRYING LATKES? Turn pot and frying pan handles away from the edge of the stove so that children should not be able to reach them.

TREATMENT

  • Extinguish a fire with a fire extinguisher. Call 911 if the fire department is required. Call Hatzalah for injuries.
  • In case of burns, remove all clothing from the injured area.
  • Place the injured area under cool/tepid water for 10 minutes.
  • Cover the burn with a dry, clean cloth or towel.
  • DO NOT use cold water, ice, ointment, butter, or home remedies.

Crown Heights Hatzalah wishes all of our friends and neighbors a Happy and Safe Chanukah!
