This summer, girls from Gan Yisroel Florida Girls Overnight Camp visited Jewish senior communities across South Palm Beach and North Broward counties, creating unforgettable moments of joy and connection between generations.
The visits began with campers joining the seniors for davening, filling the room with heartfelt voices and uplifting spirit. They performed skits, recited poems, sang songs, and shared inspiring Torah ideas and personal stories.
Introductions were a special part of the program. Campers would share their names, hometowns, and something unique about themselves, while seniors responded with their Jewish names and interesting life experiences. This simple exchange opened the door to meaningful conversations and lasting bonds.
Though much younger, the campers had plenty to share and teach — from stories of their summer adventures to thoughtful insights about life and learning. The seniors, in turn, offered encouragement, wisdom, and plenty of smiles.
One resident shared, “The campers coming is my therapy for the year. They remind me of the true joy of being Jewish.” Another woman, Lori, recalled her own camp days and even joked that she wanted to “sign up as a counselor.” She concluded by giving the girls warm blessings for the rest of the summer and the year ahead.
For many campers, these visits were a highlight — a chance to connect with “bubbys” and “zeidies,” feel appreciated, and share what they’ve learned. As a well-deserved reward for their efforts, the girls enjoyed a post-visit stop at Wawa or 7-Eleven for Slurpees — a sweet ending to a sweet day.
These visits are organized by Chabad for Seniors, directed by Rabbi Eli and Shira Wajsbort, who also lead the Gan Yisroel Florida Girls Overnight Camp. The program continues to build bridges between young and old, strengthening Jewish community life in a joyful, personal way.
